Dream of Home Ownership

Family by family, home by home, our projects continue and our community grows. Though each family’s experience of the path leading to homeownership is unique, all are grounded in BRH’s common story.

In the heart of the north side of Lawrence, where one in four people live in poverty, a vacant, abandoned lot is acquired by a small nonprofit—Bread & Roses Housing (BRH). A new, energy-efficient home is built on the lot through the collaboration of community partnerships.

A hard-working, low-income family is selected by BRH through a comprehensive application process to purchase the home at a price they can afford. The first-time homeowners move in, and BRH continues to provide personalized family support services, ensuring the family’s success in retaining the home.

The new home construction in itself has greatly improved a distressed neighborhood. The homeowners, now vested in the community, participate in programs and projects that benefit the neighborhood and the Greater Lawrence area.

But the success does not end here. BRH has incorporated the once-vacant lot that the home is built on into a community land trust, and this is the key to perpetually affordable, owner-occupied homeownership for generations to come.
